bulletDescription:

The J visa allows you to come to the U.S. temporarily to receive training through a government-approved exchange program. The training must be in one of the following fields: (1) arts and culture; (2) information media and communications; (3) education, social sciences, library science, counseling, and social services; (4) management, business, commerce, and finance; (5) health-related occupations; (6) aviation; (7) science, engineering, architecture, mathematics, and industrial occupations; (8) construction and building trades; (9) agriculture, forestry, and fishing; (10) public administration and law. For training in any field, you must be participating in an approved exchange program that sponsors your stay in the U.S. You can arrange your training yourself, and in some cases the U.S. company or organization providing the training may already have an approved exchange program in place. If the company or organization does not have such a program, or if you need assistance in finding placement in a training program, there are private programs that have been approved by the U.S. government to sponsor individuals for a J visa It is important to note, however, that if you spend time in the U.S. on a J visa, you may be required to return home for 2 years before being able to apply for a different type of visa or a green card. In some cases this 2-year home country physical presence requirement can be waived. Your eligibility for the waiver depends upon a variety of different factors, including your country of residence and the type of program you participate in.
