| Description: |
The B-1 visa allows you to come to the U.S. temporarily for business. While in the U.S. you are not allowed to be employed by an American employer or operate your own company. If you are paid for the work you do in the U.S., you must be paid by your employer abroad. The B-1 category encompasses many different types of situations. Some common examples in which a B-1 visa would be appropriate include coming to the U.S. to negotiate a business contract; to consult with clients or business associates; to participate in a business conference; or to perform services for your overseas employer. With a B-1 visa you will be admitted for the amount of time necessary to conduct your business. You may be admitted for a maximum of 1 year, with the possibility of requesting six-month extensions.

It is not intended to replace the advice and counsel of an attorney, and you should not rely on it solely when making decisions about your immigration status.
